Grade Level: 2nd - 3rd
Subject Area: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies

Step 1:
Students will draw a picture in a graphic program based on the assignment. This could be a self-portrait as a beginning of the year getting to know you assignment or could be a picture of a character in a book or an historical figure or a plant or animal or something else for science.

Step 2:
Students will create a document in Microsoft Word OR Google Documents and insert and resize the picture they drew centered at the top of the page. The student will then write an Acrostic Poem using Microsoft Word OR Google Documents to describe the picture they drew. Some examples:
  • Self-portrait: The student would type their name vertically on the page and write the poem using the letters in their name for each line of the poem.
  • Historical Figure: The student would type the name of the historical figure vertically on the page and write the poem using the letters in that person's name for each line of the poem.
  • Fall Picture: The student would type Autumn or Fall (depending on grade level) vertically down the page and write the poem using the first letters in that word for each line of the poem.
  • Character in Book: The student would type the name of the character vertically on the page and write the poem using the letters in the character's name.

When we do this in the lab, it is required that the first letter be larger than the rest of the letters on each line of the poem. It can also be a different font or a different color than the rest of the line if the student wishes. Students are also required to add a page border, if using Microsoft Word.

Each year in our lab, the 2nd Grade students do an Acrostic about themselves at the beginning of the year. It can be tough for them to come up with words. There are some links to sites with alphabetical lists of adjectives to the right, but here are some more ideas.
A - This one is actually really easy because they are "A boy" or "A girl" or "A student" or "A sister", "An awesome kid", etc.
C - There are quite a few good adjectives for this but they can also use the word "Can" or "Can't". For example, "Can run faster than anyone in the class."
I - So easy if they are writing about themselves because they can just write a sentence starting with "I". "I am 7 years old." Think about this for an Historical Figure too but for "H" (he) or "S" (she) instead of "I".
L - Start this one out with Loves or Likes something.
M - They can always use an "M' to write about "My" something. For example, "My dad is an airline pilot."
X - This is a tough one but not quite as tough these days with so many Xbox players out there. In the past some of my students have "cheated" this one a bit and put a tiny "e" in front of the X and used things like "eXcited to be in 2nd Grade."

Some other things to have them think about that they could use:
  • Favorite color - For example, "Red is my favorite color." In fact, favorite anything works!
  • Nickname - For example, "JJ is my nickname."
